Ebook About “Relentlessly exciting ... My top recommendation for this summer.” —Ron Charles, The Washington PostNEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE • A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK • The unforgettable story of a daredevil female aviator determined to chart her own course in life, at any cost—Great Circle “soars and dips with dizzying flair ... an expansive story that covers more than a century and seems to encapsulate the whole wide world” (Boston Globe). “A masterpiece ... One of the best books I’ve ever read.” —J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Friends and StrangersAfter being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There--after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes--Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe by flying over the North and South Poles.A century later, Hadley Baxter is cast to play Marian in a film that centers on Marian's disappearance in Antarctica. Vibrant, canny, disgusted with the claustrophobia of Hollywood, Hadley is eager to redefine herself after a romantic film franchise has imprisoned her in the grip of cult celebrity. Her immersion into the character of Marian unfolds, thrillingly, alongside Marian's own story, as the two women's fates--and their hunger for self-determination in vastly different geographies and times--collide. Epic and emotional, meticulously researched and gloriously told, Great Circle is a monumental work of art, and a tremendous leap forward for the prodigiously gifted Maggie Shipstead.Book Great Circle: A novel Review :
The strength of this book, the prose, was also what made me dislike it some. I just don't think this book needed over 600 pages to tell the story. Shipstead's writing may be viewed as superior by a lot of readers, but honestly I just wanted it to end. This is not a usual review for me, because I tend to give 5 Star reviews as long as I'm happy at the end of the book. The only thing I was happy about was that I didn't have to read it anymore.I did finish the book. I was surprised at the ending, which is good. However, I'm still asking myself why everybody in the book was either cheating on someone or sleeping with someone of the same sex. Just not for me.I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own. This review is based on my experience of reading the ENTIRE kindle version of this novel. NO SPOILERS revealed here.... just honest opinion.MODERATELY INTERESTING: The use of dual timelines and stories was easily understandable and the connections between the two were compatible and intriguing. About 75% of the story is invested in the Marian Graves timeline and although I preferred this to the Hadley timeline, there is an INCREDIBLE AMOUNT of "life" that is revealed. At first the DETAIL and INVESTIGATION of EVERY MONTH of Marian's life starts out as interesting but as you continue with the story you realize that MOST of the information is extraneous to the story. After I finished the book I kept thinking to myself "Why did I need to know ALL of that?" **BUT what is even MORE PERPLEXING is that this same investigation is used for several supporting characters as well. EXAMPLE: At about 40% the Hadley character and friend take some shrooms and get high. There are 4 PAGES of discussion about what being high feels like.......It was like this...... it's like that..... IT WAS NEVER ENDING...... The superfluous information throughout this novel did NOT impart a deeper connection or empathy with the characters. In fact I would estimate that my feelings about the characters are very apathetic (personally that is NOT a sign of great reading experience and especially NOT a memorable novel).EXTREMELY BORING: There are MANY instances where the author does the complete opposite and SUMMARIZES the timeline so instead of reading first-hand about what the characters say and do you are given a glossed-over idea of what occurred during a certain period of time. I felt DISCONNECTED with the story and I became UNINTERESTED and UNMOTIVATED to continue. I would actually count the pages to determine how much further I needed to suffer in the summary before the story switched to a present-tense setting (even though I was frustrated with all the useless minutia).FINAL THOUGHTS: I would NOT recommend this novel as it currently reads. I think the novel could easily be edited and slimmed to 400 or less pages without sacrificing the momentum of the story. Frankly, the truncation of the story to its integral parts may strip away the extraneous information to allow the reader a more direct experience of the inner turmoil and conflict of the characters and ultimately the book may perform better with reviewers.
